Journeying through the loom
Term: Summer 2021
Artist in Residence
Organization / Musume: Al Sadu House - Kuwait, Kuwait City.
“Journeying through the loom” focuses on building a connection between the weaver and innovative Al Sadu patterns. Bedouin female weavers have historically been the primary drivers of design in Al Sadu motifs, starting from the point of inspiration to the production process which includes everything from building traditional Bedouin wool tents and weaving Al Sadu pieces and other textiles. The piece challenges our understanding of connectivity, by linking the weaver with innovative, renewable Al Sadu motifs and transforming the wool threads that were traditionally used to build our homes into iron wires that are used in the construction of our homes today. The piece also sheds light on the important role the tradition of weaving has played in forming a cultural footprint for our country and a legacy that has been passed through generations and is a source of pride to this day.
